High School Scheduling

We would like to inform you about the changes to the WW-P Program of Studies and the high school scheduling process. Please note: A student who does not meet the criteria for enrollment in a particular Honors or Advanced Placement course may request permission to enroll in such a course, despite not meeting the criteria; this can be accomplished by requesting an individual review of the student's particular circumstances (click the link on the left-hand side of this page: Course Eligibility Review).

Starting with the 2012-2013 school year, and using the first semester grade average, the following criteria shall apply to the determination of eligibiilty for Honors and Advanced Placement courses:
  • Students who currently are in Advanced Placement and Honors courses can continue in that level as long as they are passing the course with a grade of 70 (C or better).
  • Students who currently are in Honors and achieve a grade of 80 (B) can enroll in an Advanced Placement course.
  • Students who currently are in a College Prep course who achieve a grade of 80 percent or higher (A or B grade) are eligible to elect an Honors level course.
  • Students who currently are in a College Prep course who achieve a grade of 90 percent (A) in a College Prep course are eligible to elect an Advanced Placement course.
  • Students who currently are enrolled in A&E Math and transitioning from Grade 8 to Grade 9 can continue in that level as long as they are passing the course with a grade of 70 (C or better).
  • Pre-requisite courses will continue to be required as described in the Program of Studies.
A student who meets the above criteria shall be eligible for enrollment in the respective Honors or Advanced Placement course, but shall not be required to enroll in the course. Such a decision should be made only after consultation with appropriate parties, which may include the student, Guidance counselor, parents, teacher, subject area supervisor, and, in the case of a classified student, members of the IEP team. For students eligible to enroll under the about crtieria, the final decision to do so is with the parents or, in the case of an adult student, the student him/herself. For further details and to understand the difference between College Prop, Honors, and Advanced Placement courses, please read the Guide to Appropriate Course Placement. Another tool to consider in deciding whether or not to take an Advanced Placement course is AP Potential.

A student who does not meet the criteria for enrollment in a particular Honors or Advanced Placement course may request permission to enroll in such a course, despite not meeting the criteria, by requesting an individual review of the particular circumstances. Reviews should be requested to the Guidance counselor as soon as possible, following communication of eligibility determinations to the student and his/her parents, but no later than April 1. In consultation with the parents, teacher, Guidance counselor, subject area supervisor, and such other professionals as the principal deems appropriate, an individual review shall consider the following performance data:

  • Standardized assessments such as PSAT, ERB, and NJASK scores
  • Overall GPA
  • Mid-Year common assessment score
  • Department-specific measures, e.g. Math grades for Science courses, Document-Based Question (DBQ) for Social Studies, holistic essay score for Language Arts, and first two Math grades
  • Marking Period 3 grade (if available) or previous End-of-Year content area grade
The final decision shall be made by the principal within three weeks of a request, but no later than April 15. The principal's decision shall be appealable to the superintendent or superintendent designated assistant superintendent, whose decision shall be final. in the case of students who are classified as eligible for Special Education and related services, the individual review shall be conducted by the IEP team, with full participation by the parents and student in accordance with state and federal laws. The IEP team shall consider all the information available to them, including but not limited to the criteria and circumstances set forth in this regulation, and determine the appropriate course placement for the student. If the parents disagree with the placement arrived at through the IEP process, they may file a request for mediation and/or a due process hearing in accordance with IDEA procedures.
