Dear 6M Parents and Students,

You will hear throughout this year that 6th grade is a “transitional year”.  Students will transition from elementary student to middle school student, from having 1, 2 or 3 teachers each day to 7, from child to preadolescent, from academically-focused to socially-focused and in some cases, from seemingly effortless success to new and unexpected challenges.  It is our goal this year to help 6M students make this transition as smooth as possible.

At Grover Middle School we strive for a three-way partnership to assist in the success of every student.  When parent, teacher and student work together, students find the greatest success.  This partnership will be crucial in easing the transition that sixth grade presents.

We would like to begin the year with a list of general strategies that parents, teachers and students can use to help students make a smooth transition to middle school.  On the back, you will find the list of necessary supplies for this school year.

Strategies for Sixth Grade Success

Strategies for Students

  1. Check Google Calendar  on a daily basis for homework assignments.

  2. Ask teachers for help during FLEX time if an assignment is unclear.

  3. Make a schedule for completing your homework (after school, after dinner, etc…)

  4. Be prepared for class with necessary supplies.

  5. Designate a quiet time and space for homework where you can keep extra supplies.

  6. Post a large calendar in your homework area to plan long-term projects so that you don’t leave them until the last minute.

  7. Mark test dates on your calendar so that you can study over the course of several days.

Strategies for Parents

  1. Allow two weeks for the initial back-to-school physical and emotional adjustment.  After this time, your child will be able to open his or her locker with ease, find every class on the schedule, have made some new friends, and may even be able to wake up without a fight.

  2. Periodically check homework calendar to be sure that your child is using it on a daily basis.

  3. Place extra supplies (pencils, pens, glue sticks, ruler, scissors, etc…) in an accessible place so that your child can replenish supplies when needed, from September through June.

  4. If your child seems overwhelmed, help him or her to break down the list of tasks into manageable pieces and make a plan.

  5. Contact a team teacher or sixth grade guidance counselor if your child is overly anxious about schoolwork.  If the smiling face that we see each day is in tears at home, we need to know.

Strategies for Teachers

  1. Write homework assignments on the board or project each day at the beginning of class so that students may copy them into their chromebook with ease.

  2. Post homework on team calendar.

  3. Allow at least 5 days notice for major tests.

  4. Team teachers will guide students in using a binder/folder system, which will help students to organize their class materials.

  5. Allow time for periodic locker and notebook organization.

  6. Team teachers will devote time during the year to teaching study skills, note-taking skills, and organization strategies.

We are looking forward to establishing a wonderful partnership with the parents and students of team 6M!

Sincerely,

The 6M teachers

Students should bring a pencil or pen and their picture, for the first day of school and all supplies by Thursday, September 8th.  These will be needed all year.  Parents, please be sure that your child replenishes his or her supplies as needed throughout the year.                      Thank you!
