As this has been like no other school year, as a district we continue to look for ways to plan, iterate, and be responsive to feedback.  One area of feedback the district has received has been around students’ screen time since moving to the all-virtual and hybrid settings.

Screen-Free Wednesday afternoons will help to alleviate students' screen time one afternoon a week for a few weeks during the Fall/Winter of this school year. On the following dates, all WW-P schools will institute “Screen-Free Wednesday Afternoons” and operate on an abbreviated schedule. Students will experience classes in the morning only on the Screen-Free Wednesdays afternoons listed below. On those days students will not have additional classes or work in the afternoon. Community Education will be conducting the in-person Extended Day Program (EDP) for currently registered students who are in need of care.

Screen-Free Wednesday Afternoon Dates Are:

  • Wednesday, Nov. 18

  • Wednesday, Dec. 2

  • Wednesday, Dec. 9

  • Wednesday, Dec. 16

The grade level schedules on the above-mentioned Wednesday afternoons are as below. This schedule applies to both hybrid and all-virtual students.

  • Maurice Hawk Half-day preschool students will have an all-virtual learning day on the above dates.

  • Elementary schools will operate on a conference day schedule allowing students to experience all classes in the morning.

On Screen-Free Wednesday afternoons, students will not have additional classes or related services (e.g., speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy, etc) those afternoons. All regularly scheduled afternoon services will occur during the morning periods. Students will be encouraged to close their Chromebook and spend the afternoon participating in activities away from their computer screen. Click here for a great resource of activities for Wednesday afternoons.

WW-P staff will utilize the screen-free afternoons to support collaboration and professional development. Teachers and staff members will not be available to answer student questions during Wednesday afternoons.

Please note that this is a pilot program. As we move into January 2021, the District will evaluate feedback around the Screen-Free afternoons and determine next steps.
